Voice OutputCommunication Device: The GoTalk Express 32
The Go Talk 32 is a voice output communication device that pairs prerecorded messages with predetermined pictures for a non-verbal student to communicate to others. The student uses the device by pressing the selected picture and the prerecorded message will play. There are 32 spots, for 32 prerecorded messages and pictures, and it is best to use objects and statements that the child will use most throughout the day. The Go Talk 32 has the availability to link messages such as "I would like" "my book" "please". Previous versions the student would have to press three different buttons, one after the other to have that sentence play. There are also LED's that show you which button was pressed for visual identification.
I have seen this device used in ABA and Multiple Disabilities classrooms. Especially in the beginning of using this device, teachers help students to mand for certain items. Teachers will verbally, visually or physically prompt the student to ask for the object (usually starting with food) and once the student uses the device, the student is rewarded with the object. In students IEP's, there are usually goals for how many times a student will use the communication device to demand and object and progress monitoring takes place by recording the number of successful attempts/ actual attempts.
